I love your podcast and just started freaking out over this one because I had just finished reading “The Secret Life of Mary Bowser.” Which gives the espionage credit more to Bet’s former slave than herself, I highly recommend reading it…changes how one thinks of this podcast episode.

Beautiful, grim story. Just one question – what is the music that you use, the very repetitive guitar (starts at 4’33”)? I heard it first on This American Life (in the heartbreaking poem/story by the late David Rakoff, “Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace”) and I’ve been combing the internet for that music ever since…

Found this podcast last week, and I just listened to everything up to Crazy Bet. Have to say that this one is my favourite (Canadian spelling – woot!) so far for the way you brought us along in the story.

I read the Transom article, and I commiserate about not having enough time – but I can’t wait to hear more when you do have time. I kinda wish I hadn’t listened to them all so fast.

I just discovered your podcast this week. Wow, I am glad I did. Your podcasts are like mental movies and, while I loved history when I was in school, I imagine that for teens who may not, they will after hearing your stories. Thank you for this wonderful podcast, it’s one of my favourites!

May I suggest adding some ID3 tags to the audio files before publishing them? Itunes users probably don’t notice them missing (it seems to apply the metadata from its directory to files it downloads), but if you use any other podcatcher with the RSS feed or manually download episodes from the website, even the basic Artist/Title/Album fields are empty. Most of the time I end up having to dig through the file system browser on my phone or MP3 player because I forgot to add the tags myself 🙁

This is great stuff. Every episode sort of reminds me of the time that I asked a friend, who I knew quite well by this time, to “tell me the most-next-interesting thing that I don’t know about you.” I’m certainly no history expert, but how can a story this good not have come across my path before? Over and over again. Keep it up, Nate.
