Everything you do, really is quite beautiful. Ive listened to countless memories but only ever commented now, and I know there are many like myself; whether they leave a message behind or not, your voice does not fall upon deaf ears. I recently watched Grave of the Fireflies, and I was wondering if you be willing to narrate an anecdote from Japanese history? Anyway, love your podcast =]

In response to Huff, Jr. up there on his high white throne.

Alcoholism and clinical depression are certainly serious issues that are no laughing matter. But there is also an art and intelligence in humor, satire, and caraciture. Would you tell Dickens, Twain, Wilde, and Vonnegut that they are immature and insensitive? (Maybe you would!)

Besides, life is too heavy. We need this sort of lightness to make it through before we turn to dust and ash like both the "President" and "Ms. Pierce!" Ce n'est pas vrai?

I love the chiasmus (don't mean to sound like a pedant!) you've created in this story.

It's beautifully told, beautifully written, and eagerly heard.

You seem to get the historical facts correct, but I find your presentation rather distasteful. You are much too insensitive to both the President and Ms. Pierce. You have little respect for the health conditions (alcoholism) and (clinical depression) of both of them. One final thought. It is immature to use the word "suck."

As usual, great story!

I remember taking a trip to Cooperstown as a young lad in the 1970s, where we also stopped at the Farmer's Museum to poke around.

Wandering aimlessly through the farming implements and other detritus I stumbled on a small pen behind a barn where there was what appeared to be a man lying amid some straw.

I had never heard the story of the Cardiff Giant and my brain immediately wondered why a statue was placed just there?

After reading the story on a small placard my 8 year old mind marveled at how someone would think it was ever a real man. But then as I stared at the face I could almost imagine an imperceptible movement.

I suppose we're all suckers at heart. Which may or may not be our saving grace as a species.

Finally, I don't want to be the storyline quibbling guy (but I guess I am): I believe he was made of gypsum, not marble. Although some marble cutters were the ones hired to create him.

Finally, I am amazed that it cost $30,000 in 1860s money to create him. Wow.

As is the case in life, quality quite often is more important than quantity, and I think it takes a "special kind" of mind to feel short changed by a free service.

At the very least I wish my Writting had 1% of Nate's sublime beauty.

Keep up the good work Memory Palace.

I had never listened to your podcasts and am still not sure what they are about. But this made me so sad because it summarizes what humans do to the world around them. I will remember it and use it as an opening quote when I write my phd... Thank you for that!

Just discovered your podcasts and have, too quickly, listened to them all.. Rising and Falling left me smiling, Box made me cry (Damn You!), but Dreamland was my favorite. So beautifully told. I could hear the wonder in your own voice.. Thank you for these..

I liked the episode--it was kind of like flash fiction. I actually listened to it twice.

What was the source for the 50 words? A newspaper? A speech?

Dear Wesley,
I'm sure you're swell, and meant no harm in what you said. BUT
I can't help being inclined to softly pat you on the back leaving behind a sign that says
"I appreciate very little and feel I deserve everything.
Please procede to kick me."
But my childhood is over, so I will refrain from such inclinations and instead say:
Dear Wesley,
I hope somehow you will recover from your disbelief and sensations of ridiculousness.

Kind regards,
Angela

You have some nerve wasting an entire month in jury duty when We, the public, demand that you release free podcasts of a certain length and "unRidiculousness". UnCease and unDesist or we shall be forced to contact our solicitors.

And by solicitors, I mean cats wearing rumpled suits and tiny bowler hats.

Hmmm, afte reviewing the facts I have decided that Wesley is right, and I am herby debiting him an addtional minute and a half of life to him so that he won't feel his time was shorted. In return I ask him to complain less about things he gets for free.

Now I have to go set up the incoming call system for the Super Bowl. You all be nice out there!

Unbelievable! I waited a month and a half, hoping to get a memory palace update and what was released on the iTunes podcast was a podcast that lasted slightly more than a minute. This is what results from a month and a half of effort? Ridiculous.

Heard the Jenny Lind podcast on NPR and couldn't shut off my car until it was over even though I arrived at my destination. I grew up in Bridgeport CT where every July 4th there is a huge parade, various civic events and among other things a "Jenny Lind" contest as P.T.Barnum once called Bridgeport home. To understand the history of the time Jenny Lind lived and how music was heard was illuminating. I thank you for this wonderful piece and will continue to learn from your podcasts now that I know they exist. Just spellbound!

It's easy for those of us out here in Radioland to snipe away at small mistakes. But that's hardly fair, after I've enjoyed your podcasts as much as I have. The vignettes are intriguing, you write with some care and flare (rare among historians, both academic and general), you have an engaging radio voice, and you recognize the value of remaining succinct. So, many thanks from one of many (until now) silent listeners.

Dreamland burned down in 1911. A scale model of the Golden Gate Bridge would have been prescient: the actual bridge was not built until 1933-37.

My father is from Alfred, Maine, and I have heard the story of the elephant who was shot by a disgruntled farmer since I was a little girl. I nearly fell out of my chair when I listened to this episode! There is actually a memorial stone on the spot of the shooting in that tiny town, supposedly the elephant is buried underneath it. I can't believe that whole legend is actually true! And that it was Bailey's circus! I would love to know more about the story. Thanks for all your hard work, I love this show!

Beautiful, grim story. Just one question - what is the music that you use, the very repetitive guitar (starts at 4'33")? I heard it first on This American Life (in the heartbreaking poem/story by the late David Rakoff, "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace") and I've been combing the internet for that music ever since...

I'd be so happy if you'd tell me!

Mr. DiMeo. I have to tell you that you have talent that I wish I had. You are a wonderful story teller who with a few well chosen lines, really got to me. The part about the kids sitting on the floor like story time in the library and the line "I could see friends I wish I had kept in touch with and the ones I'm better off without." Thanks for letting spend a few minutes as a 21 old with the best friends I'll ever have.

Terry Pratchett has something similar in his Diskworld series: the Listening Monks, who meditate and try to hear the first sounds of Creation, and before Creation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religions_of_the_Discworld#The_Listening_Monks). Perhaps they were inspired by Marconi's idea, or just the idea of telescopes looking back through time for all that has come before.

My granny had a portrait of Jenny Lind hanging on her bedroom wall until the day she died. It was the first thing she ever saved up to buy as a young woman and she treasured it. I loved your story and she would have, too. Thank you.

I grew up in Wellesley Hills—went swimming in my early winters at the Babson College pool. Thanks so much for this story, Nate. Wherever he was geographically doing his theorizing and anti-gravity investment thing, I imagine him up the street, at the height of a hill the town named for someone who may have zagged, but, well, the tide zigged right over him.

Also, if you know a thing about the town of Wellesley, your moral is the saddest, most appropriate takeaway. I've been loving all the MP shows I've heard, but this one's special. Thanks again.

A wonderful story and a great ending. I've always loved your podcast and stories and the note at the beginning was one of the most convincing I've heard - one of TAL's may have edged you out, but you both appealed to my love of the art of what you do, so I'll head over and sign up now. Thanks.

Hi Nick - I heard about your podcast on the Judge John Hodgman podcast, wrote it down, and eventually checked it out in the iTunes store. I've subscribed, as I love a good storyteller's tale (am long time devotee of TAL), and send you good wishes for much success. You have good tales and an excellent voice!

This was the first Memory Palace podcast I heard - I immediately downloaded every other episode, because I loved it, I've loved them too. Thank you, Nate.

It reminded me of something that I read years ago, but I couldn't remember any details - just that sense of grief when transcendent beauty goes away, and of needing to try, however imperfectly, to hang on to any little shred of it.

I finally found it today - it's from the biographical introduction to _The Works of Robert Louis Stevenson_. This is the passage I dimly remembered:

------------------
There is an unconscious pathos in Stevenson's fondness for his flageolet. He played it so badly, so haltingly... Looking back, I can recall how constantly he spoke of music. He would recur again and again to the dozen or so of operas he had heard in his youth, repeating the names of the singers ... in a zest of recollection; and he would talk with the same warmth and eagerness of the few great instrumentalists he had heard in London concerts. And it was always, of course, with an air of finality, as of a man speaking of past and gone experiences that could never be repeated.

He bought an extraordinary amount of printed music — Chopin, Grieg, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart — and would pore over it for hours at a time, trying here and there, and with endless repetitions, to elucidate it with his flageolet.

...

To-day when I see on every side those wonderful mechanical devices for the reproductions of vocal and instrumental music, I feel an almost unbearable regret that they have come too late for Stevenson... and what a surpassing joy and solace they would have been to him.

Found this podcast last week, and I just listened to everything up to Crazy Bet. Have to say that this one is my favourite (Canadian spelling - woot!) so far for the way you brought us along in the story.

I read the Transom article, and I commiserate about not having enough time - but I can't wait to hear more when you do have time. I kinda wish I hadn't listened to them all so fast.

This is my introduction to the MP and such a lovely episode to start with, and one that resonates with me personally. I was in the band Kicking Giant and toured with Tattle Tale many times, your bare description instantly resounded a moment in my mind and I knew exactly who you were talking about. I wonder if we were there at the show you described, it was a house show in Santa Cruz, the cops came to shut us down but we stayed and everyone sang "She's Real" a cappella in the dark, it's one of my most treasured memories.

Thank you for this!! I am new to the show, finding it through Maximum Fun, but an intro referencing Tattle Tale is a great introduction- I'm looking forward to keeping up with it!

Alas, Nate, my parents don't get the credit. The Mr. and Mrs. Hogben who deserve the plaudits are the parents of mid-twentieth-century biologist, socialist, scientific humanist and-all-round-dude Lancelot Hogben: http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storyCode=162693&sectioncode=6 .
Another beautiful episode, Nate. Like a lot of them it gets at the very meaning of history--events which have past, people who lived and are gone, moments which will not come around again and can only be experienced at time's remove.

Long time listener, etc. Thank you so much for these. My life is a little bit better because for five minutes every so often I get to be informed, entertained, and moved by your work.

Well, Lancelot, if that is indeed your real name (and, if that is indeed your real name: way to go, Mr. and Mrs. Hogben!), the song is "A Girl's Tool-Box" by a band called Tattletale

Hello Thememorypalace,
In addition to your post I was wondering Consumer electronics have taken over many aspects of our home lives in the last 40 years. It's easy to forget that human civilisation existed for thousands of years without consumer electronics, as the products we use on a daily basis are so deep-rooted that many of us would swear we are not capable to conduct our lives without them.

I never put pressure on podcasters because I know that we all have different values in life keeping us busy.

I was very happy when I read that The Memory Palace is back. Your podcasts are special. I can look back at the history and remember exactly where I was when listening to most of your podcasts (usually exploring on my bike). You have a special gift. Thanks for sharing it!

I hope that life provides a way for you to continue to share. If not, I wish you the very best in whatever you choose to do. Thanks for the memories!

I don't qualify for the Audible offer because I have also been a customer for years, at least 12 I think.

It was easy enough to remember the URL you wanted people to visit, but you should post it somewhere here. I couldn't find it if it is here.

It reminds me of the movie that the actress Glenn Close was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of a woman who lives her life dressed as a man so that she can earn a living. Albert Nobbs is the movie.

I just discovered your podcast this week. Wow, I am glad I did. Your podcasts are like mental movies and, while I loved history when I was in school, I imagine that for teens who may not, they will after hearing your stories. I'm going to recommend your podcasts to every teacher I know. Thanks and keep them coming!

Just heard that fascinating piece on JPJ. In 1991, I was a Jeopardy! contestant and the Final Jeopardy subject was "Final Resting Places", was phrased more or less like this: "In 1805, more than 100 years after his death, this man was reburied with full military honors at Annapolis." I bet the farm and won $22,500 - a one-day record @ the time.

Thank you for this wonderful podcast, it's one of my favourites!

May I suggest adding some ID3 tags to the audio files before publishing them? Itunes users probably don't notice them missing (it seems to apply the metadata from its directory to files it downloads), but if you use any other podcatcher with the RSS feed or manually download episodes from the website, even the basic Artist/Title/Album fields are empty. Most of the time I end up having to dig through the file system browser on my phone or MP3 player because I forgot to add the tags myself :(

Gah, comment left in wrong place!

This is great stuff. Every episode sort of reminds me of the time that I asked a friend, who I knew quite well by this time, to “tell me the most-next-interesting thing that I don’t know about you.” I’m certainly no history expert, but how can a story this good not have come across my path before? Over and over again. Keep it up, Nate.

Just discovered your podcast today and have been methodically working through the episodes, all these moments of heartbreak.
Love the show. But: why this episode has the voice on the left channel and the music on the right one? I tried to listen to it with headphones but it's really, really hard to follow...

[and, please, forgive me for my english, I'm italian :)]

Well, it's about damn time! I hate like hell to get hooked on a podcast, and then have it die. So The Memory Palace is not dead -- this is a very good thing. Thanks for all of your efforts; I do appreciate it.

Two humble suggestions: Use a pop filter. Get your mouth about 8-10 inches from the mic. We all love the proximity effect, but it can play havoc with the EQ.

Hey...I'm really glad you're back.

So, are you still doing stuff for Grantland? I'm not sure if grantland can handle the palace (or vice versa) but I'd love to hear, I dunno, a memory Palace about Dock Ellis, Eddie Gaedel, the real Moonlight Graham, something like that. Plans? Oh, and this episode was fantastic.

Nate, I so miss your stories. Please hurry back soon as you can.

Don't know if this is intentional on your part, but you tend to hypnotize me by the end of each episode. I'll be deeply thinking about what you've said and even watching some of the colorful details go off in different directions with a life of their own.... Then I'll realize, "hey... he did it again... I've been sitting here in silence for 30 seconds!"

GREAT article, Nate. It nicely captures the contingency that seems so much a part of independent content creation today.
Not to mention the uncertainty and the promise. From the confines of your closet to the potentially global audience available via the Internet and BBC? Amazing all around: that those channels exist and that folks keep grinding it out to uncertain acclaim. But good for all of us that you do.

Wow. I am so glad that you came to Slate. I am an addict of their podcasts, but do need a break from the discussions and have to take a mental breather and turn to short stories or something that takes me away from what is going on in the world. You are just what I have been craving.
I do so love the vignettes and stories that pull me in with emotion and curiosity. The obscure histories and personalities and situations surrounding their lives are fascinating. Your voice and subtle background are soothing and make the interesting stories more compelling. Great job and thank you! I have found another addiction.

Hey I really enjoy your mini historical audio pieces. I really hope you keep doing them. Even though they look at a small portion of the past, each one seems to shed light on shit that is happening today.

"The feeling...of having just the right song come on at just the right moment..." Cue Yo La Tengo.

Is there a more just-the-right-song-at-just-the-right-moment band than YLT? I think that the sentiment may actually postdate their formation.

Well played.

Wow, this was really wonderful. Just started listening, and I've downloaded all the (available) episodes. I'd love to hear the first handful, but they're not on iTunes anymore.

Wow - whoda thunk? And I was always under the impression that Randy Newman wrote the Dr. Pepper song, but a visit to wikipedia informs me that he wrote a different Dr.Pepper jingle.
Guess I was dazed and confused ...
