I have been listening to every single episode of the Memory Palace. This one really hit me! As an anonymous public health IT specialist working 12 to 16 hours a day, 6-7 days a week during this pandemic, I feel I am traveling in uncharted seas and when, when on those rare occasion, I get to go outside my home office, I look at the people around, not respecting the advices, not wearing masks, I feel like an outsider, someone from another world. Thanks for this episode, it was great! It reminded me of that USSR cosmonaut, Serguei Krikalev who went up to the MIR space station in 1991 and came back in 1992 citizen of a another country Russia...
Thank you so much, Nate. For doing this. I’ve listened to this episode about a dozen times. It’s given me hope as a progressive in this tumultuous year. It finally got me to join the DSA. Workers deserve value they’ve always been neglected. I’ve been a history podcaster for awhile now, partly inspired by you. Thank you for the work you do.

I listened to this while just entering my office building this morning and had to stop in the stairwell on my way up. We see and hear every day that something is deeply wrong at this moment in history, but hearing it in this manner, laid bare in that truly disarming way in which The Memory Palace always seems to be able to voice is gut wrenching. I feel both devastated and seen. I had my little cry in the stairwell, then I walked through the doors - worked, and went on.

Thank you Nate and the Memory Palace Team.

There's a lovely story I see sometimes in railroading history books. An elderly female passenger climbing aboard one of the steam trains for the Mount Washington Cog Railway asked one of the crew "What happens if the brakes fail?"

"That's no problem, Ma'am." said the crewman, who got asked this a lot. "We've got another set we can put on."

"Yes, but what happens if they all let go?"

At this, the seasoned railroader tipped his hat, and said "Well, ma'm...that depends on what kind of life you've led."

Dear Mr. Nate "Makes-Me-and-My-Husband-Cry" Dimeo,

I loved this story. I listened to it twice. But, for the life of me, I cannot understand why it's called "The 8th Story". Did Ms. Oliver not fall from the 80th?

The suspense is killing,

The episode ends by suggesting that we, like Hercules' daughter, take some solace in the idea of Hercules getting to freedom, but it doesn't acknowledge the real horrors that his 'freedom' likely entailed, eg, the constant risk of capture, no legal status, separation from his family, etc. I know this is short-form history and it can't do everything, but this episode's final note seemed just off the mark in that regard. Up to then, however, the episode did an excellent job of illustrating some humanities that are often overly mythologized—Washington and enslaved people alike. Great storytelling, as always. (And if you read this, Nate, I hope you take this as just a minor critique from an interested listener, rather than as criticism from an internet monster. Anyway, all the best.)

It's hard to beat Nate in telling history as stories (yet still honest history) but he has beat himself. Any American hearing about Hercules and his master should feel ashamed, but Nate doesn't try to shame.
More than an amazing story. Your heart-felt, lyrical prose/poetry really made a strong connection for me to your subject. What an amazing life: To be blessed in early life with a strong sense of who she was, blessed with the intelligence to figure how to live it, and lucky enough to find the exact right partner-in-crime to act it out with.

Googling "Fran prairie chicken" was easy enough to the Wikipedia article and more. Curious
than her husband's full name was mentioned only once in the podcast and hers, not once--an unintentional omission, I'm sure.

I came across her granddaughter's website about Fran Hamerstrom's personally organized post World War II effort organizing friends and colleagues to send 3000 articles of shoes and clothing to people in need in 13 countries. The granddaughter's book (1000 tracings) was inspired by finding a box full of letters from war torn Europe containing tracings of feet so proper sizes shoes could be sent to face the brutal winter following the war.

Clear, Fran Hamerstrom was even larger and more compassionate in life than even this artful podcast was able to convey.

Worth a look: http://tracings.litajudge.com/stories1.html

Nate, this was a fantastic and very personal story for me to listen to. I've had T1D for almost forty years. I got it in my mid twenties. You and your kids have my deepest sympathies. Ive always felt lucky that it didn't hit me when I was a kid. It would be especially hard on them. I'm sure you are aware of the problems with high blood sugars but the lows can be horrible. Also I suggest putting them on the insulin pump. It really does refine the control. There's real hope with stem cell research for a permanent cure. Stay optimistic.

This hit home for me, since both of my children have Type 1 diabetes. There was some crying, yes, but I also found a deeper appreciation for the current availability of insulin and technology which allows diabetics to live long, normal lives. Thank you for the much-needed context. T1D is an expensive, annoying disease, but it is good to remember that once it was a death sentence, and that we've come a long way.

I have many memory palace episodes which vie to be my favorite, but this one is the most important to me. I am going to share it far and wide.

I'm of the area. We recently lost another station, WUMD of UMASS Dartmouth from the air wave (they still broadcast online). WBRU is a mixed bag for me. I used to love it probably up till 2003 or so, and the quality of Dj went really downhill really fast, so they kind of signed their own death sentence (When was the last time you actually tune in to 95.5 to listen for the quality of broadcasting?). On top of it, it was the radio station that agreed to sell itself to the highest bidder, unlike in the case of WUMD that was sold without the knowledge of the station. Anyway, the point is that we have a fundamental problem, so to speak, where we submit to whatever the bottom-line is. I have no idea how to change that.

You've had a lot of excellent episodes, but this... this was poetry. The soundtrack to my youth came from a handful of radio stations that are gone now, and the songs are inextricably bound up with those memories of the first tastes of freedom, love, and mischief. Thanks for the eulogy, it's a fitting term, and thanks for your work.

I love the Memory Palace, but I am often completely lost while listening to it. Your voice is too hypnotic and I have trouble actually grasping the subject you're trying to cover. It would be awesome if you would add a brief blurb about what the episode is actually about in the notes so that I can then Google it and read up on it myself. Or reference links?

Thanks so much for the wonderful story about BRU, this truly was my station since I was delivering the Brockton Enterprise newspaper as a 4th grader and listening to my walkman. I too drove to the beach blasting BRU, went to dozens of concerts at the now defunct Lupo's in downtown Providence and probably just as many in India Point Park on the waterfront sponsored by BRU. I couldn't believe it when I flipped on the station on my way home from work on October 2nd that wasn't BRU anymore, completely shocked. It's a major bummer and thanks for the wonderful piece.

I Love your podcast, which I found after lea Taub's recommdation. My only suggestion would be that you find a way to allow listeners to hear several sessions at a time, without having to go back to the phone to click on a different episode.

In any case, it's a great program. I loved the one in rhyme, about McGurdy, but I have liked many others as well, including The Fresh Pond piece. (I used to live in Cambridge.)

I hope someone gives you a lot of money and you become a big star.

Despite your warning that this episode would not be at its best away from the museum, I must disagree. As I listened from the other side of the world, in the wintertime here, I found my imagination's own journey through your sound poem completely transfixing! Not 'seeing' what you were describing took my experience to a whole other level. And Mary Lattimore's music was integral to that. Thank you!

What a treat this was, Nick! I have no quarrel with any of your episodes, as they all leave my heart a little brighter. This piece was especially playful and let me think how fun it would be to take in an exhibit with you and enjoy it from your eyes. Your narration and still my freedom to choose what to focus on.

I especially enjoyed the happy coincidence that I listened to this episode on Aug 8 (8-8) which is Infinity Day. A day made to celebrate Art, Philosophy, Science and Life. Well played, indeed.

Thank you. For this episode and for your entire podcast.

Another engaging episode that conveys the poignancy of events previously passed over by history.

I recall seeing a Disney film as a kid, One Little Indian, that had camels in the southwest as a plot element (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Little_Indian_(film)) so thanks for providing a historical narrative of exotic animals, early immigration, and a reminder that truth is often behind what at first appears to be folklore.

I have been enjoying The Memory Palace since the first episode but this is my first comment. I saw Joseph Greenstein - The Mighty Atom perform in Ephrata, PA at The Green Dragon and remember being impressed with his show. I cannot recall the year but it was most likely during the early 1970's since he passed away in 1977. Thanks for all of the interesting episodes!

Wonderful and relevant piece...will share with anyone who says sports and politics should be held at arms length.

Heads up that, when the Nazi's held their rally at Madison Square Garden, MSG was located at 8th avenue and 50th street. The current Garden was opened at its current location at 33rd street in 1968. The Mighty Atom would have been looking for a bat and ladder at a hardware store a handful of blocks uptown.

I'm *so* glad I didn't skip over this episode. This is the best story Nate has told all year. It's perfect Memory Palace: a beautiful story, made more beautiful by the music and soothing voice and callbacks to things earlier in the story.

This may just be my favorite episode yet, top 5 for sure!
Another gem. It reminds me of a beautiful William Stafford poem:

At the Un-National Monument along the Canadian Border

This is the field where the battle did not happen,
where the unknown soldier did not die.
This is the field where grass joined hands,
where no monument stands,
and the only heroic thing is the sky.

Birds fly here without any sound,
unfolding their wings across the open.
No people killed—or were killed—on this ground
hallowed by neglect and an air so tame
that people celebrate it by forgetting its name.

I know it best as put to music by John Gorka: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBgCeHqPIs0

Hi Nate,
A quick note to offer thanks and encouragement. I love podcasts and yours has risen to the top off my list. I love sharing your stories with my two kids (girl 13 and boy 12) while in the car. They immediately unplug from their devices at the start, listen intently during and have discussions at the end of each podcast. That brings more joy to me then you can imagine. I hope you continue for many years to come.

How about an unsolicited and possibly unwanted story idea?!?...

The ice industry on the late 19th - early 20 century was very important in the development of the country. It allowed for urbanization and expansion of cities. It's scale was massive and now almost forgotten. I would love to hear a story bringing to life a small part of that industry.

With great affection

I'm more than a little disappointed that you, of all people - the sort of writer who loves to dispel misconceptions - would perpetuate the myth that it was the cold weather at the inauguration. For shame, Nate! Even a casual look at history would make it clear that he didn't become ill until 3 weeks after the event! And that it might have been cholera from the White House's plumbing instead. :(

Hey Nate!

Longtime Chicagoan here. I was disappointed to hear the episode end where it did, though the entire thing was lovely. I actually shed a tear – I love this city so much. Chicago had a ferris wheel at Navy Pier from 1995 - 2015 and we have a brand new one as of 2016. I know it's not the same, but I think it was worth mentioning. I still remember my first time riding. Just because we've gone ever higher, with skyscrapers and such, doesn't mean there isn't something uniquely thrilling about being in/on a ferris wheel!

Hi Mr DiMeo
I absolutely love your work.

Last week I was so thrilled to hear your voice on Karina Longworth's podcast last from a years back. Your storytelling style voice are just terrific. I really hope you get a chance to do a live show in the Philadelphia area sometime soon.

I am a history and literacy teacher in alternative education. I have for many years been using audio clips from oral histories and radio documentaries in class and would like to use some of your work.

I wonder if you have ever released transcripts of your shows (Weak readers often benefit from listening and reading along.)

Although I thoroughly appreciate the problems it might cause, I would be happy to pay for the priviledge.

Peace,
Godbless,
and Thanks for your good work;

I absolutely love your work.

Last week I was so thrilled to hear your voice on Karina Longworth’s podcast last from a years back.

Peace,
Godbless,
and Thanks for your good work;

pat
