* I’ve read a bunch about the canals over the years, but the most fun I’ve had was going through the New York Times’ archive and just searching for Canals and Mars and reading article by article through the years, watching the debates, seeing conjecture reported as news, and then watching it all unravel.
* For more on Lowell, I recommend Percival Lowell: the Culture and Science of Boston Brahmin, by David Strauss.

* This one features two appearances by X-Ray, by Youth Lagoon.
* One from September, by Giles Lamb.
* And a long one by Red Dawn, by Enzo.

  1. Ken Pimple says:

Excellent as usual, Nate. I caught what sounds to me to be mistakes.

First, around 2 minutes, you mention the “green skinned damsels.” I think you’re confusing Edgar Rice Burroughs’s John Carter series. There are red Martians who look just like humans (most notably, the beautiful Dejah Thoris) and green Martians who have six limbs (such as Tars Tarkas) and are not pretty at all and could not be described as damsels.

Second, you mention around 6:50 that Lowell found “two of the moons of Mars.” Mars has only two moons, Phobos and Deimos (fear and terror).

It’s one of those things when someone, and that someone’s researcher, think they know things that they don’t actually know. The best thing to do is to find some zealot about the topic (I’m one on this topic) to check the little details.

At any rate, yours is the best podcast around.
